Welcome to Queen’s University and the Athlete Services program. Queen’s University has a great academic tradition and consistently leads the CIS and OUA in total number of Academic-All Conference selections. Queen’s had 100 CIS All-Canadians four out of the last five years and also continues to lead the conference in OUA Academic Achievement award winners. With the addition of a full-time
Athlete Services Coordinator, the opportunity for Queen’s student-athletes to be successful academically has never been greater.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Athlete Services program is that all student-athletes should be integrated with existing University services and resources in the areas of academic support, learning strategies, career development services, and health education related services. Our philosophy is that the educational pursuit of the student-athlete needs to be owned by that student-athlete. Ultimately, you are responsible for the classes you take and the degree you earn. However, as a Queen’s interuniversity student-athlete, there are many inherent time demands and constraints. Athlete Services therefore provides the tools and resources necessary to help the student-athlete navigate the university environment to optimize success, all the while developing as a student and person.
Gaels Academic Excellence & Long-term Success (G.A.E.L.S.) Program
This program is a proactive initiative to help support both the 1st year student-athlete in getting accustomed to university academics and the returning student who has fallen below their academic goals. The program is designed to assist the student-athlete to strive for excellence academically with a series of helpful workshops and study sessions that will be mandatory for all 1st year student-athletes and returning student-athletes who are on academic probation.
Tutoring and Study Groups
Athlete Services organizes both tutoring and study group opportunities for all student-athletes. Tutoring is a free service for all Student-athletes and is also an opportunity for successful upper year student-athletes to earn extra money as athletes are given priority for all tutoring opportunities. Study groups are organized within the athletic department so that two or more student-athletes from different teams who are in similar classes can work together to achieve their academic goals.
