Women's Tindall Invitational Day Three - Queen's goes 3-0 with win over Thompson Rivers, Laval beats Acadia

KINGSTON Ont. (October 5, 2014) - Queen's finished their home tournament 3-0, beating their competition from Acadia, Laval, and Thompson Rivers. The Gaels women's basketball team welcomed Acadia, Laval, and Thompson Rivers to the Tindall Invitational basketball tournament from October 3 to 5 at the Athletics & Recreation Centre in Kingston.

Tournament All-Stars
MVP - Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) of Queen's nabbed a total of 35 points, 19 rebounds, and five assists in the tournament, with a 13 point, eight rebound performance against Laval contributing to her honour as MVP.
Queen's - Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) scored 35 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and added seven assists in the tournament, including a 14 point and nine rebound game against Thompson Rivers.
Laval - Sarah-Jane Marois 
totalled 45 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in three games at the Tindall Invitational, including a 19 point, five assist, and four rebound outing against Thompson Rivers on Friday.
Thompson Rivers - Kassie Colonna had 40 points, 22 rebounds and 8 assists in the tournament, including a double-double performance against Acadia grabbing 14 points and 10 rebounds.  
Acadia - Emily MacLeod put up 41 points, 19 rebounds, and seven steals for the Axewomen at the tournament, including a 21 point, seven rebound, and four steal performance against the Wolfpack.

Day 3
Laval vs Acadia - BOXSCORE

Laval finished 2-1 at the Tindall Invitational tournament after beating Acadia, who finished a winless 0-3, 72-47 on Sunday. Sarah-Jane Marois of Laval and Emily MacLeod of Acadia earned tournament all-star honours for their respective teams.

In Sunday's game, Jane Gagne led the Rouge et Or on the offensive end of the court, netting 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Gabrielle Girard picked up a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Marois also finished with 11 points for Laval.

Alexandra Berry had the best numbers for Acadia, sinking 10 points and hauling in 12 rebounds for a double-double.

With the 72-47 win, Laval finished 2-1 at the Tindall Invitational, while Acadia ended their trip to Kingston 0-3.

Queen's vs Thompson Rivers - BOXSCORE
Queen's finished off their home invitational tournament with a 3-0 record after claiming a 76-59 win against the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack. Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) earned tournament MVP honours and Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) was named a tournament all-star for the Gaels.

Thompson Rivers ended their trip to Kingston 1-2, with Kassie Colonna, who finished the game with a team-high 14 points, being named a tournament all-star.

Sunday's final game of the Tindall Invitational was aggressive, with the Gaels reaching the foul line 20 times and the Wolfpack 27. Queen's grabbed an early lead, which they never relinquished, as they shut down Thompson Rivers offence with defensive dominance. The Woldfpack kept it close, but a 25-16 third quarter and 58.3% three point shooting in second half gave the Gaels the advantage they needed to secure the victory.

Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) led all scorers, contributing 19 points to the 76-59 win for Queen's, while Hazlett added 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Gaels will be back in action October 16 when they travel to British Colombia for more exhibition games. 

Day 2
Queen's vs Laval - BOXSCORE

Despite conceding the first points of the game, Queen's defeated Laval 75-58 in a fast paced game. 

In the first half, the Gaels came consistently took advantage of their speed, growing their lead to 17-9 by the end of the first quarter. Defensive pressure from Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) and Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) was essential in keeping a lead on the scoreboard. Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) ended the first half with a buzzer-beater, leaving the Gaels up 34- 27 to Laval heading into the third quarter.

The second half started with Laval dominating the court with a breakaway and back-to-back three pointers, leading the Rouge et Or to take a 38-37 lead. The Gaels answered back by driving hard to the basket, which resulted in the Gaels getting to the free throw line 11 times in the third quarter. Toward the end of the second half, Laval was forced to step up their defence to a full court press in order to challenge the Gaels strong ball movement, but Queen's maintained their lead througout the fourth quarter, ending the game up 75-58.

The Gaels leading scorers were Robyn Pearson (Toronto) with a game-high 18 points and Emily Hazlett with 17 points for the team. Pearson dominated in the second quarter scoring 10 points for Queen's.

The Gaels are in action again Sunday at 2pm against Thompson Rivers at the Athletics & Recreation Centre. 

Acadia vs Thompson Rivers - BOXSCORE
Thompson Rivers picked up their first win of the tournament on Saturday, beating Acadia 67-46.

The Wolfpack depth wore down the Axewomen on day two of the Tindall Invitational, as 10 different Thompson Rivers players got on the scoreboard. Kassie Colonna led the Wolfpack to victory, picking up a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds. Michelle Bos and Taiysa Worsfold were also offensive contributors for Thompson Rivers, adding 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Emily MacLeod put up a game-high 21 points for Acadia in a losing effort. 

Thompson Rivers plays the undefeated Gaels on Sunday at 2pm, while Acadia will look for their first win of the tournament against Laval at 10am.

Day 1
Thompson Rivers vs Laval - BOXSCORE

A dominant second quarter pushed the Laval Rouge et Or past the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack, winning the first game of the Tindall Invitational 66-50 on Friday afternoon in Kingston.

The Wolfpack kept it close early, taking a 17-15 lead out of the first quarter. But the scoring tandem of Sarah-Jane Marois and Gabrielle Girard proved too much for the Thompson Rivers defence, as Laval put together a 25-7 second quarter en route to a 40-24 halftime lead. Both teams battled in the second half, but the Wolfpack couldn't make up any ground, with the Rouge et Or going on to win 66-50.

Marois finished with a game-high 19 points and game-high five assists, while Girard contributed 13 points and five boards. 

Kassie Colonna had a good game overall for Thompson Rivers, scoring a team-high 12 points, grabbing five rebounds, and making four assists. Jorri Duxbury of the Wolfpack finished a point and a rebound off a double-double, as she had nine in each category.

Laval plays the host Queen's at 2pm on Saturday, while Thompson Rivers battles Acadia at 6pm.

The Queen's women's basketball team started the Tindall Invitational on Friday with a 74-43 win against Acadia University.

The Gaels were quick on offence in the first half with constant drives to the basket putting them on the foul line nine times versus Acadia's four. Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) was able to grab three turnovers for Queen's, and Gaels teammate Abby Dixon (North Vancouver, B.C.) led all scorers at half with 10 points.

The second half saw stronger offensive pressure from Acadia, with Emily Macleod breaking through the Gaels defensive line chalking up 13 points overall. The Gaels kept up the pressure, getting to the basket and falling into a drive and kick rhythm. The Gaels dominated the offensive rebounds, totalling 23 to the Axewomen's 11, en route to a 74-43 victory against Acadia.

Dixon matched Acadia lead scorer with 13 points at the end of the game, followed by Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) with 11 points and veteran Liz Boag with 9.

The Gaels are back in action on Saturday when they take on Laval at 2pm at the Athletics & Recreation Center. Acadia plays Thompson Rivers at 6pm.
