BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (January 10, 2013) - In an important game for the Gaels women's basketball team and the community, Queen's was able to come out triumphant both on and off the court. Thursday evening's 70-63 Gaels victory in the ARC Main Gym was the Queen's Shoot for the Cure match, which is part of the CIS Women's Basketball Coaches Association's fundraising campaign for the fight against breast cancer.

Last year, the CIS 'Shoot for the Cure' campaign raised over $100,000, and over half a million dollars ($ 512, 394.58) since its launch in the fall of 2007. The Gaels were able to do to do their part, putting on an exciting game and helping raise awareness for a disease that has touched millions of lives. Donation boxes could be found throughout the ARC, and donations can be made online. Coach Dave Wilson also pledged $1 for every point scored during the match (totaling $133) and challenges members of the Gaels community to do the same.

The visiting Lions opened the scoring with a Courtney Osbourne (Markham, Ont.) jumper; however Queen's was quick to respond taking the momentum early. The Gaels went on a 9-3 run, dominating both ends of the court and bringing some energy to the ARC. Queens continued their first quarter surge with an and-one play by rookie guard Emily Hazlett (Fredericton), an opportune three-point shot by sophomore guard Rachel Urosevic (Waterloo, Ont.), followed by a series of Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) free throws and a three-pointer, to help the Gaels close out the first frame, 23-11.

York was first on the board in the second as well, with guard Nadia Qahwash (Kitchener, Ont.) netting one from beyond the arc. The Gaels were quick to respond however with Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) scoring five, followed by Hanna Koposhynska (Mississauga, Ont.) making a set of free-throw shots to cap a Gaels 7-0 run. The Gaels and Lions exchanged baskets until the remaining minute, when Lions forward Erin Sarapnickas (Wallaceburg, Ont.) made two timely three-point shots to bring York within seven going into the half.

The Gaels were able to take the momentum early in the second half with Hazlett contributing two assists, and a lay-up of her own to open an 8-4 run—Hazlett was the game leader in assists with 6. She also contributed eight points and two rebounds earning the Domino's 'dominator of the game' title in her first career start. Throughout the third the Lions continued to push, finishing the third quarter on a 13-4 run, and pulling within two points of the tricolour.

Queen's put in their most dominating effort in the fourth quarter, opening the first five minutes on a 12-5 run, to regain the lead they had lost after York's third quarter scoring spree. Hazlett and second-year wing Wright were the ringleaders of the Gaels run contributing on each of the baskets. Queen's and York proceeded to exchange baskets until the final minutes. With less than four minutes left, York was able to regain their scoring touch and muster a 10 point scoring run to close within seven points of the Gaels. The Gaels strong offensive showing was enough to help them claim a 70-63 lead and an important home victory in the Queens Shoot for the Cure game.

The Queens Gaels women's basketball team looks to keep up their winning ways as they host the Laurentian Lady Vees on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 6pm in the ARC Main Gym, and this game is part of Queen's 'Super Saturday'.
