KINGSTON, Ont. – A pair of first-half tries by
Tim Richardson (Vancouver, B.C.) led the Queen's Gaels to a 24-0 shutout of the McGill Redmen in non-conference men's rugby action at Tindall Field in Kingston, Thursday. The veteran Civil Engineering major, playing at No. 8 in this game, scored in the 27th minute and again in the 31st minute to put the home side up 17-0 at halftime.
“It was a solid effort to open the season,” said
Peter Huigenbos, the Gaels' head coach. “We were pretty loose, and we struggled to keep our composure in the attack, but defensively our guys are locked in.”
The Gaels' other first-half try came from Pat Richardson (Vancouver, B.C.) in the 20th minute.
George Gleeson's (Toronto, Ont.) 59th minute try, combined with fullback
David Worsley's (Vancouver, B.C.) second conversion of the afternoon, provided the Gaels with their final margin of victory.
“The shutout was nice to get,” said Huigenbos. “McGill is a well-coached team and they were unlucky not to have success at our goal line.”
The Gaels' opening weekend continues on Saturday, as the Dartmouth College Big Green play the Redmen at 1 p.m. The Gaels return to action on Sunday morning, as they host Dartmouth at 9 a.m. Both of those games are set for newly-renovated Nixon Field (formerly Kingston Field).
NOTES: Today's game was originally scheduled for Nixon Field, but was moved to Tindall Field due to the ongoing construction. Should further field changes be required, they will be noted on
www.gogaelsgo.com … Queen's Seconds played McGill's Seconds immediately after this afternoon's game, and other reserve matches are planned for the remainder of the weekend.
