KINGSTON, Ont. (Aug. 24, 2012) –
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) led all scorers with 25 points, but the Queen's Gaels were unable to pull off the upset as they fell, 105-84, to the Northeastern Huskies in preseason basketball action at the ARC Main Gym, Friday. Faulkner, the transfer from Carleton who was playing his first game in 16 months, went 9-for-16 from the field, including three three-pointers.
In addition to Faulkner's 25, rookies Suhkpreet Singh (Vaughan, Ont.) and
Patrick Street (Etobicoke, Ont.) scored 11 points each, as the seven Gaels freshmen contributed a combined 35 points. The Gaels' 85 points is the most scored by Queen's since an 86-37 win over RMC on Feb. 18, 2011.
Northeastern was led by Jonathan Lee, who scored 19 points on 4-for-7 shooting and made eight free throws. The Huskies had six players in double figures, with Joel Smith adding 15, Quincy Ford scoring 13, Reggie Spencer and Demetrius Pollard adding 12 and Zach Stahl chipping in with ten. With the win, the Huskies close out their week-long Canadian tour with a 6-1 record.
“The game went about as we expected,” said
Stephan Barrie, the Gaels' head coach. “There were a lot of positives from this game. We focused on our effort, energy and playing together, and those elements were good. But the turnovers show that we are a young team. Our players worked their tails off, and we're determined to get better.”
The Gaels (0-1) stormed out the gate, much to the delight of the child-laden crowd of 417, using a 16-4 run to build up a 22-8 lead with 5:45 gone in the game. However, that was the high-water mark for Queen's, as Northeastern used an 18-4 run, punctuated by a Zach Stahl dunk, to turn the tide. The Huskies took the lead at 27-26, and led by as many as 17 points later in the half. However, the young Gaels chipped away, ending the period on a three-pointer by
Ryan Golden (Barrie, Ont.) to cut the halftime margin to 54-46.
Queen's pulled to within five at 71-66 on a three-pointer by Nikola Mislencevic midway through the second half, but five straight points by Demetrius Pollard put Northeastern back up by 13, dashing any hopes of a late Gael comeback.
Queen's shot 47.0% from the field, including going 10-for-26 from three-point territory, while Northeastern hit 56.3% of their shots overall, and went 10-for-21 from downtown. The Gaels were hampered by their 23 turnovers, as Northeastern's defence created 17 steals. The Huskies coughed the ball up only 13 times.
The Gaels are off until September 22, when they host the Morrisville State Mustangs at the ARC Main Gym.
