ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (February 5, 2011) – Rookie forward,
Shawna Griffin of Redwood Meadows, Alta., registered her first career CIS hat-trick helping the Queen's Gaels to a 6-1 win over the Brock Badgers in women's hockey on Saturday.
The win lifts the Gaels to a 12-8-4 record sitting tied for fifth place with the Toronto Varsity Blues with 28 points.
Griffin opened the scoring for the Gaels on the power play at 7:05 of the first period recording her third goal of the season.
Queen's
Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont., scored the eventual game winning goal at 18:53 of the first period.
The goal was Thomson's 14th of the year giving her 30 points on the season good for second place in OUA scoring, eight points behind Brock's Kelly Walker of Brampton, Ont. Walker was held off the score sheet against the Gaels.
Griffin would go on to score in the second and third periods.
Kristin Smith of Toronto tallied three points including a goal and two assists.
Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., turned away 19 shots with her only blemish coming at 5:24 of the third period when Rachel Piotrowski of Waterloo, Ont., scored on the power play.
Brock's Kim Jory of Brandon, Man., took the loss facing making 18 saves on 24 shots.
Queen's travels to Guelph on Sunday to face off against the third place Gryphons (15-6-3). Puck drops at 2:00pm.
