Canada vs. Czech

Canada's run in men's curling comes to an end

| By:
ERZURUM, Turkey (February 3, 2011) - The World University Games tournament came to an abrupt end for the Queen's University rink led by skip Jon Beuk of Kingston, Ont., as Team Canada lost the Czech Republic in the men's curling tie-breaker.

Tied with the Czech Republic after round-robin play with a 6-3 record, Canada fell 11-7 to the Czechs with a spot in the semifinals on the line, and ended up fifth overall.

The Canadians jumped in front with a point in the first end but saw their rivals respond with three points in the second. With the game tied at 4-4 after five, the Czech Republic scored four in the sixth to take a commanding 8-4 lead, but the Canadians came back to within one with two points in the seventh end and one in the eighth.

The ninth end proved fatal to Beuk's rink however as the Czechs sealed the victory with three points.

After claiming gold in 2003 when curling made its Universiade debut, the Canadian men had finished sixth in 2007 and 2009. The sport wasn't part of the program at the 2005 Games.
