MONTREAL (November 10, 2011) -
Alexis McKinty of Burlington, Ont. broke the 1-1 tie in the 70th minute to lead the No. 4 Queen's Gaels over the No. 9 Alberta Panda's 2-1. The Gaels now advance to the CIS semifinal where they will take on the No. 6 Ottawa Gee Gees Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm.
The Gaels back four were tested early by the Pandas who made several good runs against the Gaels defence. The Gaels withstood the Aberta attacks and responded with a great chance of their own as CIS All-Canadian
Riley Filion of Alexandria, Ont. put a good through ball to
Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay, Ont. who couldn't finish the strike. The teams traded attacks through a fast paced opening ten minutes.
CIS All-Canadian striker Jacqueline Tessier of Winnipeg broke the deadlock in the 17th minute as she scored a spectacular bicycle kick goal after a great cross from
Alexis McKinty of Burlington, Ont. found Tessier lurking in the box.
Heather Lund of Red Deer, Alta. created the best opportunity for the Pandas to equal the scoreline after a great run up the Gaels' right side. The Pandas couldn't capitalize as as the ball went skipping across the Gaels goalmouth to the far sideline.
Breanna Burton of Ottawa had the best chance for the Gaels to extend their lead before half after taking a great feed from Chamberlain but ultimately couldn't beat Kelti Biggs of Spruce Grove, Alta. in goal for the Pandas.
The teams went into the halftime break with Tessier's strike as the lone goal through 45 minutes of play.
Shortly after the half, Tessier appeared to have added her second goal of the game to the Gaels effort shortly after half but it was called back due to an offside flag.
The Pandas had a fantastic chance to equal the score 15 minutes into the second half as Carleigh Miller of St. Albert, Alta. took a feed from Lund but couldn't beat the OUA's female athlete of the week

In the 65th minute the Alberta Pandas found their equalizer as Kayla Michaels of Edmonton scored off of an Alberta corner kick into the box. With the goal, the Gaels shutout streak of 375 minutes was brought to an end.
The Gaels bounced back five minutes later as Tessier returned the favour to McKinty. After a great run down the right wing, Tessier set up McKinty who hammered the ball home from just outside the box.
The Pandas gave the Gaels a scare shortly after the McKinty goal as Shalla Kadima of Edmonton had a chance at the Gaels six yard box but it was ultimately stopped by Marson who smothered the ball.
The final ten minutes of the game were played in midfield as the Gaels looked to limit the Pandas chances. Tessier had one final chance to put the game beyond doubt as she caught Biggs off of her line, but the Pandas keeper caught the Tessier shot while scrambling to get back in the net.
Tessier was named the player of the match with a goal and an assist because of her strong play up front for the Gaels.
With the win the Gaels will now advance to the semifinals as they take on the Ottawa Gee Gees Saturday at 1:30pm who beat the Dalhousie Tigers earlier in the day 3-2.
