Gaels fall to Golden Hawks on the road

| By:
WATERLOO, Ont. (January 9, 2010) - One day after dominating the Waterloo Warriors, the Queen's Gaels could not duplicate their performance as they fell to the No. 2 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks by an 8-1 score.

Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont. held the Gaels in the game throughout the first period as she turned away nine of the ten shots the Golden Hawks put on net in the opening frame.

The Gaels would not be able to keep the Golden Hawks close for long though as Laurier scored four goals in the second period, two of which came from Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., who scored both a power play and shorthanded goal respectively.

The Golden Hawks would add three more goals in the third period before Guelph, Ontario's Morgan McHaffie would score the lone Gaels goal with three seconds remaining in the game. Brittany McHaffie, also of Guelph, had the only assist on the goal.

Morgan McHaffie's goal moves her within one point of Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont., for the Gaels scoring lead as McHaffie has now scored 11 points in her last nine games. Karissa Savage of Calgary came on to replace Dodd-Moher in the second period. Both goaltenders surrendered four goals in net for Queen's.

The Gaels will look to rebound from the loss next Friday, January 14 as they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Memorial Centre. It is a crucial game for both teams as they are very close in the standings with the playoffs coming up. Puck drop is set for 8:30 pm.
