KINGSTON, Ont. (January 26, 2011) – Former Queen's football player Gary Schreider passed away at his home peacefully this weekend at the age of 76.
Schreider played for Queen's from 1953 to 1955, winning the Yates Cup as the OQAA Champions in his final year with the team. That same season, he was also named a league all-star at the halfback position.
For the success he had while playing at Queen's, Schreider was inducted into the Queen's Football Hall of Fame in 1987.
Following his time at Queen's, Schreider moved on to a successful nine year career in the CFL with the Ottawa Rough Riders. He won the Grey Cup with Ottawa in 1960 and was a member of the Eastern CFL All-Star Team.
After his playing days, Schreider became a lawyer and was the first president of the CFL Players' Association and the chairman of the first CFL All-Star Game. He eventually moved into hockey where he became the first sole arbitrator for the NHL and the NHLPA, serving for more than a decade.
Aside from being a member of the Queen's Football Hall of Fame, Schreider is also a member of the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame, the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame and the St. Michael's College School Wall of Fame.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church in Ottawa tomorrow morning at 11:00 am.
