St. Catharines, Ont. (August 6, 2010) - Three Queen's University rowers captured gold medals at the 128th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta on Friday in St. Catharines, Ont.
Christie Campbell of Toronto and
Allegra Courtright of Calgary won the senior women's pair race finishing in seven-minutes and 24.63 seconds.
In the under-23 lightweight women's pair, Queen's
Emily Richardson of London, Ont. teamed up with local Kingston rower Alisha Campaigne for the victory. Richardson and Campaigne finished in seven minutes and 30.95 seconds just three seconds ahead of Amanda Montgom and Dani Dewitt from the Mendota Rowing Club based in Wisconsin, USA.
“They were looking very strong after their heat two days ago and we were fairly confident going into the race,” coach
Zola Mehlomakulu said. “We were cautiously optimistic. We knew some of the other crews had decent speed, but we just had to make sure we had a good race.”
For their efforts, Campbell and Courtright take home the Henley Island Helpers Prestige Trophy while Richardson won the Lancaster Brooks & Welch 125th Anniversary Trophy.
The Gaels were representing the Kingston Rowing Club at the competition.
The event continues Saturday and Sunday with several other Gaels in contention for further medals.
