KINGSTON, Ont. (August 19, 2010) – The 2010-11 season has officially opened for the Queen's Gaels with men's and women's soccer, and football training camps opening this week.
Men's and women's soccer were the first teams to get underway as they opened training camp last Sunday. The women's team, who finished fourth at the CIS Championship last year and lost just one game in the regular season, will be looking to go on a similar run this year. They will open their exhibition schedule this afternoon as they travel to Montreal to face the Montreal Carabins.
As for the men's team, they will be looking to build on last year's regular season success that saw the team post their best record since 2006. The men will begin exhibition play Monday, Aug. 23 when they host the UQAM Citadins.
The football team opens camp this Saturday with rookie and veteran testing and continues through until their first contest when they open up defence of their Yates Cup and Vanier Cup titles against the McMaster Marauders on Tuesday, Aug. 31. While the team lost a number of key contributors from their championship run, a solid core of young talent, plus a number of veteran players will mean that the Gaels should be in the thick of things come the OUA playoffs.
Other Gaels teams who will shortly begin preparations for the fall season include men's and women's rugby, rowing and cross country. Men's rugby, who will also be defending their OUA Championship this year, begin training camp on August 30. With nothing less than another title as their goal for the upcoming campaign, they will once again be a force in the OUA.
Women's rugby opens training camp the same day as their male counterparts. After overcoming their rivals from Trent in the OUA playoffs a year ago, the women will be looking to take the next step as they aim for a spot in the OUA Championship match.
Selections for the various crews in the rowing team will be made beginning August 30th and will continue through the first week of September. The teams will be aiming to regain their championship form from two years ago when they captured both the men's and women's OUA titles.
Finally, the cross country team will open their training camp on Labour Day weekend with the first workouts commencing on Sunday morning. New head coach
Steve Boyd will have his first look at a team that collected third place finishes at both the men's and women's OUA Championships last season.
