Hulse leads Gaels on Day 3 of CIS Championships

WINDSOR, Ont. (March 13, 2010) - Matt Hulse of Hartington, Ont., wrapped up his spectacular season on Saturday by winning a silver medal in the men's 1500m event at the CIS track and field championships.

The third year physical and health education major finished in a time of three minutes, 50.94 seconds, which was a second and a half behind Kyle Boorsma of the Guelph Gryphons. It was Hulse's second medal of the competition to go along with a gold medal he won in the 1000m event on Friday.

The Gaels also had success in the relay events on Saturday afternoon as the team finished strong on Day 3. In the women's 4x200m relay, the team of Veronica Catry of Kingston, Ont., Janice Stirling of Wolfville, N.S., Pauliina Beretta of Toronto, and Marissa Walter of Kentville, N.S., just missed out on the podium as they finished fourth in a time of 1:42.71. The men's 4x200m relay team, consisting of Tyler Nightingale of Kingston, Ont., Adrian Heller of Toronto, Gordon Frenke of Oakville, Ont., and Shane Kelly of Ottawa, crossed the line in fifth place after a time of 1:30.39.

The final events of the competition were the men's and women's 4x400m relay. The Queen's women's team comprised of Catry, Stirling, Jenn Barrow of Brampton, Ont., and Alicia Kallos of Vancouver, finished sixth in a time of 3:52.26. The men's team made up of Frenke, Heller, Kelly and Michael Nishiyama of Edmonton, nearly grabbed a bronze medal but settled for fourth after crossing the line in 3:20.14.

In the overall team standings, the Queen's men, thanks to 18 points from Hulse, finished in 10th place with 28 points. The women's team finished 17th with 11 points.
