Gaels sweep podium in 1,000m event at York Open

TORONTO (February 7, 2010) – Matt Hulse of Kingston, Ont., raced to top position and led six Gaels into the top-10 in the 1,000 metre race at the York Open over the weekend. In all, Queen's collected 10 medals in eight different events.

Hulse posted a time of two minutes and 29.37 seconds to earn his first gold medal of the season. Queen's Clay Patterson of Portland, Ont., finished second at 2:30.82, while Joshua Potvin of Thunder Bay, Ont., was third at 2:32.75 completing the sweep of the podium.

Michael Nishiyama of Edmonton (4th), Tyson Loney of Ottawa (8th) and Anders Klaus of Hamilton (10th) also finished in the top-10.

Gord Frenke of Oakville, Ont., claimed the most medals for Queen's earning three. He captured a bronze in the men's 300 metre with at time 35.48 second, just a half second off the CIS standard. He also picked up bronze medals as part of the 4x200 and 4x800 teams. Joining Frenke on the 4x200 podium were Michael Prime of Ottawa, Adrian Heller of Toronto and Tyler Nightingale of Toronto. 4x800 runners were Nishiyama, Shane Kelly of Ottawa and William Newmarch of Kamloops, B.C.

On the women's side, Jan Stirling of Wolfville, N.S., captured a gold medal in the women's 300 metre with a time of 40.76. Stirling also napped a silver medal as part of the 4x200 team along with Veronica Catry of Kingston, Ont., Marissa Walter of Kentville, N.S. and Jennifer Barrow of Brampton, Ont.

Alica Kallos of Vancouver earned a silver medal in the women's 600 metre at 1:36.74 – and was just six seconds off the CIS standard of 1:30.92.

The 4x800 team collected Queen's other gold medal. That team was made up of Kallos, Kim Kallio of Renfrew, Ont., Heather Bijman of Stittsville, Ont., and Vanessa de Hoog of Ottawa.

Next weekend, the Gaels head across the border to compete in the Cornell University Kane Memorial Invitational.
