WATERLOO, Ont. (February 18, 2010) – Emily Young of Calgary successfully defended her Open (Gold) Solo Dance title securing gold at the 2010 OUA Figure Skating Championship hosted by Wilfrid Laurier University on Thursday at RIM Park in Waterloo, Ont.

Overall, the Gaels finished in fifth position with 55 points tallying one gold and seven bronze medals. The Guelph Gryphons captured their second consecutive title with 78 points while Western was second with 70 points. Waterloo finished Toronto was fourth.

Young, a second-year Commerce major, edged Western's Julianna Kuhl and Waterloo's Mercedes Grzenda to capture her second consecutive Open (Gold) Solo Dance title. With her gold medal performance, she was also the only Gael to secure OUA All-Star honours.

Young picked up two additional bronze medals when she teamed up with Erin Weinkaup of Richmond Hill, Ont., in the Starskate Gold Creative Dance as well as the Bronze Rhythm Dance Four's.

The duo of Melissa Cornthwaite of Keswick, Ont., and Sarah McAuley of Burlington, Ont., skated away with a podium finish in the Senior Silver Similar Dance competition earning bronze.

Other bronze medal performances came from Daniel Chung of Toronto (Men's Open Free Skate); Talia Feder of Ottawa (Senior Silver Solo Dance); and Martha Carruthers of Markham, Ont. (Gold Free Skate).

In the popular Synchro Teams competition, Queen's tallied its final bronze medal placing behind Guelph and Western who finished first and second respectively.
