KINGSTON, Ont. (October 8, 2010) –
Kristin Smith of Toronto, had a goal and an assist as the Queen's Gaels opened their season with a 2-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors.
After a scoreless opening frame, the Gaels took advantage of two Waterloo penalties to build their lead. Smith got the Gaels on the board 7:03 into the second period when she snapped a shot high over the shoulder of Warriors goaltender Martina Michaud of Etobicoke, Ont.
Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont., would capitalize on the second Warrior penalty later in the frame when she banged home a pass Smith in the slot.
From that point forward, Queen's goalie
Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., shut down the Warriors, including going post-to-post late in the third period to preserve her first shutout of the season. She would finish the game with 21 saves.
Thomson, who also had an assist on Smith's goal, finished the game with two points while
Alana Smith of Aurora, Ont., had two helpers for Queen's.
The Gaels will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time is set for 2:30 pm at Cataraqui Community Centre.
NOTES: The win was the Gaels fourth in a row over the Warriors, dating back to last season...Thomson's goal was the 48th of her career as she attempts to become just the fourth Queen's player to reach that total...the game was delayed for half an hour as Waterloo was later arriving to the rink.
