Gaels pick up three medals at Ryerson/Toronto Invitational

TORONTO (January 22, 2010) – The Queen's Gaels Figure Skating team earned three medals at the Ryerson/Toronto Invitational, a two-day event which wrapped up competition today.   On the strength of the three medals, Queen's managed a fourth place finish out of 11 competing teams.

The highlight of the competition was the gold medal performance of Melanie Graveline of Sharon, Mass., and Jena Hall of Ottawa, Ont., in the Junior Silver Similar Dance. Graveline and Hall finished with top scores in both performances to capture gold. Jenifer Ji and Katie Docherty from Ryerson finished second while Kelsey Kaster and Lauren Powell of Waterloo took bronze.

The other two medals that the Gaels won were both bronze. Martha Carruthers of Markham, Ont., finished third in the Gold Freeskate, behind Sarah Burke from Western and Amanda Tully from Toronto. Melissa Cornthwaite of Keswick, Ont., and Sarah McAuley of Burlington, Ont., earned a bronze medal in the Senior Silver Similar Dance, finishing behind the duos from Western and Guelph.

The Gaels final competition of the year will be the OUA Championships from February 17-18. The event will be hosted by the Laurier Golden Hawks at RIM Park Arena in Waterloo, Ont.
