ENGLAND (June 22, 2009) – A group of four rowers from Queen’s finished runner-up in the elite lightweight four at the prestigious Henley Women’s Regatta held in Henley-on-Thames, England, over the weekend

The crew made up of Kristine Matusiak of Glenburnie, Ont., Rebecca McWatters of Brampton, Ont., Catherine Moores of Vancouver, B.C., and alumnae Nicole Bobbette of Barrie, Ont., finished second to Mortlake Anglian & Alpha BC in the Vesta Cup final.

Queen’s progressed through their first race following the disqualification of competing Molesey Boat Club after they crashed their shell into the Queen’s boat. In the finals the Gaels led through the first 400m of the 1500m course before having an incident with one of the course markers, causing them to lose too much ground to make-up.

Also competing in the competition was Caylen Heckel of Fort Erie, Ont., who was paired with University of Central Florida’s Allisha Campaigne – a Kingston, Ont., native. The two competed as part of the Elite Lightweight 2x and lost out in the semi-final to the London RC Tideway Scullers.

“The Henley Regatta is a very significant event within the rowing community,” said Queen’s rowing captain Andrew Joyce. “The high-caliber of competition makes the women’s accomplishments here quite significant.”
