Fencing alumnus awarded prestigious Rhodes Scholarship

OXFORD, UK (December 15, 2009) - Queen's University fencing alumnus Nithum Thain of Montreal has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University.

Thain was a member of the Queen's fencing team from 2003 to 2006. He has an honours degree in mathematics from Queen's and is now pursuing a PhD in mathematics at McGill University in Montreal.

He applied for the Rhodes Scholarship through Queen's and was endorsed by the university. He is one of only 11 students across Canada to receive the prestigious award to study at Oxford for three years starting this coming fall.

Thain, who graduated from Queen's in 2006, is the 56th Queen's student or graduate to earn the award.
