KINGSTON, Ont. (October 19, 2009) - Queen's Fencers hosted 317 athletes at the 24th Queen's Invitational Fencing tournament in the West Campus gymnasium this weekend.
Queen's entered 50 fencers in the competition that was designated “Open” and thus witnessed growth in size and in the calibre of athletes.
Two members of Canada's Men's Sabre team hitchhiked from a breakdown on the 401 to be present, and won gold and silver for their efforts.
Star performances from Queen's fencers were achieved by rookies
Karl Gardner, who won the gold medal in Men's Épeé, and Frank Beaucage-Gauvreau who won the bronze in Men's Sabre.
Other sound performances in men's events were
Christian Petrozza (6th in Men's Foil),
Jack Chen (17th in Men's Épeé) and
Scott Bowman (18th in Men's Sabre).
In Women's Épeé,
Laura Bartha placed 12th and rookie
Nora Magyarody placed 15th.
Nancy Chua and Kim Sakkal placed 23rd in Women's Foil and Women's Sabre respectively. Katie Porter of the Queen's Advanced Fencing program placed 6th in Women's Sabre.
The next competition for Queen's Fencers is the RMC tournament, a team event, October 31 and November 1.
