Queen's Athletes of the Week
========================

Men's: Squash (M) Amr Hamour (Niagara Falls, Ont.)
Rookie Amr Hamour (Niagara Falls, Ont.) had a standout performance over the weekend winning both of his games where he had to battle back in each game to win. Hamour competed against McGill and Toronto and was down 0-2 before rallying to take both games. His second match against McGill was his most notable where we was behind 8-4, but staved off several match points before prevailing 10-8.

Women's: Hockey (W) Kelsey Thomson (Martintown, Ont.)
Kelsey Thomson (Martintown, Ont.) recorded four goals and netted two game winning goals over the weekend in a pair of victories for the Gaels. This helped Queen's defeat both UOIT and Guelph by the score of 3-1. On Saturday against UOIT, Thomson would open the scoring and then add her second of the night 10 minutes later to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead and the eventual win. Sunday saw Thomson score on the power-play breaking a 1-1 tie. Later she added the empty netter to ensure the Gaels victory. Thomson now has nine goals and leads the team in that category; she is second in team scoring with 10 points.

Basketball (M)
Record: 2-2 (4th OUA East)
Last week's results: Defeated Guelph 70-64; Lost to Brock 70-65
Upcoming Games: Nov. 21 @ Lakehead, 8:00pm; Nov.22 @ McMaster, 8:00pm

Queen's record remains at .500 (2-2) after splitting the weekend set between Guelph and Brock. Friday night the Gaels disposed of the Gryphons 70-64 but came up empty handed against Brock who are the 2008 reigning Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) men's basketball champions.

Baris Ondul (Istanbul, Turkey) recorded 27 points hitting six of eight three point attempts, in the Gaels 70-64 victory over the Guelph Gryphons. Ryan Hairsine (St. Marys, Ont.) would also put up impressive numbers having 19 points and three rebounds. Saturday the Gaels could not come away with a victory despite a 25 point performance by Kingston native Mitch Leger. Dan Bannister (Newmarket, Ont.) broke double digits securing 10 points for Queen's.

This weekend saw a new face on the court, but not unfamiliar to Queen's football fans as Scott Stinson of North Bay, Ont. would suit up for Queen's on the hardwood. Stinson who just finished his final season with the football team as a first-string receiver has now turned his focus to helping the Gaels. The 6'7” forward played over 10 minutes in each game and pull down eight rebounds.

The Gaels contend against Lakehead next weekend in Thunder Bay on Friday night and then will play McMaster on Saturday in Hamilton. Both games are set for an 8:00pm tip off.


Basketball (W)
Record: 3-2 (3rd OUA East)
Last week's results: Lost to Guelph 63-44; Defeated Brock 58-57
Upcoming Games: Nov. 21 @ Lakehead, 6:00pm; Nov. 22 @ McMaster, 6:00pm

Brittany Moore (Hannon, Ont.) was the Gaels top scorer over the weekend collecting 31 points as the Queen's split road games against Guelph and Brock. Queen's was downed 63-44 by the Guelph Gryphons but rebounded Saturday taking a close 58-57 overtime victory over Brock. Gaels Erin Skippon (Kelowna, B.C.) led the way on Saturday with 13 points in the overtime thriller, while defensively Maddie Soye (Waterloo, Ont.), combined for 14 rebounds in the two games on the weekend.

Queen's record is 3-2 and will hit the road next weekend travelling to Thunder Bay to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves Friday and then to Hamilton Saturday to face McMaster Sunday. Both game times are scheduled for 6:00pm.


Hockey (M)
Record: 5-6-2(1st OUA Mid-East)
Last week's results: Defeated Ottawa 2-1 OT/Shootout; Lost to McGill 3-0
Upcoming Games: Nov.21 @ UQTR, 7:30pm; Nov. 22 vs. Concordia, 7:30pm

Brady Morrison (Thamesville, Ont.) was exceptional this weekend, but only managed a single win splitting the weekend set against Ottawa and McGill. On Friday, Morrison made 36 saves and an additional eight in the shootout as the Queen's Gaels edge Ottawa 2-1. Brandon Perry (Timmins, Ont.) was lone goal scorer in the shootout for both sides as the Gaels while Clinton McCullough (Aurora, Ont.) got the regulation tally. Against McGill on Saturday, Queen's was shutout 3-0 but Morrison was solid in net making 35 saves and kept the Gaels within reach the entire game.

Queen's is tied with Toronto for top position in the Mid-East and have a record of 5-6-2. They will travel to Quebec Friday evening to face UQTR and then to Montreal Saturday to play Concordia. Both games are set for 7:30pm.

Hockey (W)
Record: 6-4-1 (5th OUA)
Last week's results: Defeated UOIT 3-1; Defeated Guelph 3-1
Upcoming Games: Nov. 22 @ Guelph, 8:00pm; Nov. 23 vs. Brock, 2:30pm
Kelsey Thomson (Martintown, Ont.) recorded four goals and had both game winners as Queen`s defeated UOIT and Guelph. Thomson now has nine goals and leads the team in that category; she is second in team scoring with 10 points. Melissa John (Unionville, Ont.) and Katie Boyd (Richmond, Hill, Ont.) shared duties in goal for Queen's. John would stop 30 saves in the win over Guelph while Boyd would stop 25 against UOIT.

Queen's record improves to 6-4 and will have a rematch against Guelph this weekend to complete the home-and-home against the Gryphons. Game time is scheduled for 8:00pm at the Kingston Memorial Centre. Sunday the Gaels will play host to Brock at 2:30pm. Tickets are available by calling 613.533.2500.


Volleyball (M)
Record: 5-2 (2nd in OUA)
Last week's results: Defeated York 3-0
Upcoming Games: Nov. 22 vs. Laurier, 8:00pm; Nov. 23 vs. Waterloo, 4:00pm

Jeff DeMeza (Calgary) put away 16 kills along with two digs, two stuff blocks and an ace for a 19 point night as they Gaels defeated York University in straight sets.

Queen's would dominate the first two sets winning both by the same tally of 25-20. Queen's would also get a strong performance from setter Dan Rosenbaum (Hamilton) who had 27 assists and Michael Amoroso (Toronto) who had eight kills, four digs and two stuff blocks. In the final set, York would not go quietly taking a late third set lead. With York sitting on set point at 24-22 Amoroso was subbed back into the game and came up with two decisive kills to tie the match at 24. The Gaels would take the momentum to record the victory 28-26.

With the victory the Gaels move to 5-2 on the season and will have full week rest before they host Wilfrid Laurier Saturday and Waterloo on Sunday. Both games will be played in the Bartlett Gymnasium at 8:00pm.


Volleyball (W)
Record: 3-4 (4th OUA East)
Last week's results: Lost to York 3-0; Defeated Lakehead 3-0
Upcoming Games: Nov. 22 vs. Laurier, 6:00pm; Nov. 23 vs. Waterloo, 2:00pm

Queen's recovered with a straight set victory over Lakehead on Saturday after a tough 3-0 loss to the undefeated York Lions Friday. Against York, the Gaels would lose the first set 25-11, but kept pace with the Lions in the final two sets falling 25-23 both matches.

Outside Natalie Gray (Oshawa, Ont.) was the Gaels top performer recording nine kills and 13 digs to lead the team with 10 points in the loss. Lorna Button (Newcastle, Ont.) was also a key contributor on the floor hitting eight kills, five digs, and two assist for an eight point night. In Saturday's contest Elyssa Heller (Highland Parl, III, USA) fired five service aces and recorded nine kills to lead the Gaels in the straight set victory over Lakehead. Heller led the team in points with 16 while setter Kristin Collins of Whitby, Ont. would record 32 assists and six digs in the win over the Thunderwolves.

Queen's record sits at 3-4 after splitting the weekend series against Lakehead and York. This week the Gaels will battle both Waterloo teams as they host Laurier on Saturday and then Waterloo on Sunday. Both games are scheduled for 6:00pm inside Bartlett Gymnasium in Kingston, Ont.



Squash (M/W)
Results: Men's 2-0 defeating Toronto 6-0 and McGill in games 15-11; Women's 0-1 lost to McGill 3-1
Upcoming Games: Cross over Tournament, Toronto, Ont. January 17 and 18, 2009

Queen's hosted the Men's Squash East Sectional against McGill and the University of Toronto Saturday afternoon. Queen's would defeat Toronto 6-0 and lose to McGill 5-1.

Rookie Amr Hamour (Niagara Falls, Ont.) had a standout performance winning both of his games after being down 0-2 in each. His most notable performance came in his fourth match against McGill where he was behind 8-4 but staved off several match points to prevail 10-8. Other solid performances came from Paul Gartenburg (Toronto, Ont.) and Andrew Brennan (Antigonish, N.S.) who won all of their matches respectfully.

On the women's side in the East Sectional in Montreal – they would square off McGill. Diana Chang (Vancouver, B.C.) would be the only Gael to come out with a victory winning 3-2 while Deborah O'Malley (Ottawa), Alison Wardlaw (London, Ont.), and Lulu Bursztyn (Kingston, Ont.), all fell to McGill 3-0. Queen's is the defending OUA Champions.

Both teams will next play in a cross-over tournament on January 17 & 18 in Toronto before competing at the OUA Championships in mid-February.

Swimming (M/W)
Results: 4th place finish at Divisional Championships
Upcoming meets: Ottawa, Ontario January 9, 2009

Queen's finished fourth in the combined results at the Divisional Swimming championships held this weekend at the University of Guelph. The Gaels were just behind Laruentian who finished third. McMaster placed first with Guelph in second.

Women's captain Whitney Lum finished in the top-eight in all four of her individual events while rookie Amanda Schembri captured silver in the 50-metre fly discipline. The women's 4x100 freestyle relay team consisting of Lum, Schermbri, Jenelle Kasper and Alex Munn shaved over six-seconds of their team best time.

On the men's side team captain Julian Chang brought home a bronze medal in the 50-metre freestyle. In total 10 of the 12 men scored points this weekend. Despite stellar performances the men placed fifth overall a behind McMaster, Guelph, Laurentian and York.
